Red Thread

Red Thread -> Click to ZoomSymptoms

Red Thread usually occurs during cool wet weather, although it can appear at any time throughout the season. The grass turns light tan to pink in round patches. Pink webs bind grass blades and when blades are dry, long pink threads protrude from the tips. Affected turf areas are more or less circular and can vary from 2 – 15 inches in diameter.

What will happen to my lawn? The damaged areas may merge to form much larger irregular shaped areas. If the disease goes untreated, the damage will continue until large areas of the lawn are affected.

What can I do? Make sure you bag your grass clippings to prevent the spread of this disease until lawn has recovered. Avoid overwatering. Do not water the lawn in the late afternoon or evening. Provide good soil drainage. Do not allow thatch levels to accumulate. Sometimes a fungicide is necessary to achieve complete control. Some local hardware stores carry fungicides that can treat Red Thread. Be sure to read the label and apply according to the directions. Depending on the severity of the disease, more than one fungicide application may be required.

Natural Way can also treat your lawn with a fungicide that will control Red Thread and minimize overall damage.
