Snow Mold

Symptoms 

Snow Mold is a cold tolerant fungus that grows at or near freezing temperature. It usually occurs when snow stays on the ground for an extended period of time. As the snow melts, circular, matted gray, pink or straw colored areas anywhere from a few inches in diameter to as much as one foot in diameter become visible.

What will happen to my lawn? Snow mold when left untreated can choke the lawn and eventually cause the grass in these areas to die.

What can I do? Gently rake these matted areas to improve air circulation. The good news is that the added air circulation in lightly infested areas will usually help the distressed turf to recover on its own. Any areas that do not recover by the end of April should be reseeded. Rake the leaves off your lawn in the fall and mow until the grass stops growing to lessen chance that your lawn will have snow mold damage the following spring.
