Chinch Bugs

Chinch Bugs -> Click to ZoomSymptoms

Lawns with chinch bug damage often look dry. Areas infested with chinch bugs tend to move from the driveways or sidewalks towards the centers of the lawn. These bugs can devastate turf during the hotter parts of the summer from mid July to early September.

What will happen to my lawn? Chinch bugs feed by sucking the juice from grass blades, injecting a poison that causes blades to turn brown and die. They are especially active during hot, dry weather and can destroy an entire lawn in a matter of days.

What can I do?Make sure your lawn is getting enough water. A properly watered lawn will resist or, at least, minimize, the damage from an insect infestation of any kind. Sometimes an insecticide will be necessary to achieve complete control. Most local hardware stores carry insecticides that will control Chinch Bugs. Be sure to read the label and apply according to the directions. Depending on the severity of the damage, more than one insecticide application may be required for complete control. Lawns with severe turf loss may need to be repaired with seed or sod.
