Lawn Grubs

Symptoms

Lawn grubs feed on the roots of many plants, but prefer the fibrous roots of turf grasses. As the root system is destroyed, sections of turf wilt, turn brown and can be easily pulled back to reveal grubs beneath.

What will happen to my lawn? They feed throughout the summer causing extensive and often irreparable damage. In July, the adult beetles lay their eggs in the soil and within weeks grubs emerge to feed on the roots of your lawn, often causing extensive damage by early fall. In addition, food-seeking predators such as moles, skunks, crows and blackbirds often do further damage in the areas where grubs are present.

What can I do? Make sure your lawn is getting enough water. A properly watered lawn will resist or, at least, minimize, the damage from an insect infestation of any kind. Sometimes an insecticide will be necessary to achieve complete control. Most local hardware stores carry insecticides that will control Grubs. Be sure to read the label and apply according to the directions. Depending on the severity of the damage, more than one insecticide application may be required for complete control. Lawns with severe turf loss may need to be repaired with seed or sod.
