Sod Webworm

Symptoms

The lawn turns brown in patches in the hottest, driest areas. Grass blades are chewed off just above the thatch line and silky white tubes can be found nestled in the root area. Worms mature into grayish-white moths that can be seen flying around the lawn.

What will happen to my lawn? Lawns infested with sod webworms often look dried out. Sod webworms can severely devastate a turf during the hotter parts of summer and turn to the lawns as their source of water during the drought periods.

What can I do? Make sure your lawn is getting enough water. A properly watered lawn will resist or, at least, minimize, the damage from an insect infestation of any kind. Sometimes an insecticide will be necessary to achieve complete control. Most local hardware stores carry insecticides that will control sod webworm. Be sure to read the label and apply according to the directions. Depending on the severity of the damage, more than one insecticide application may be required for complete control. Lawns with severe turf loss may need to be repaired with seed or sod.
