How do I know that my landscape has spider mites?

To easily locate spider mite infestation, simply get a white sheet of paper and hold it under a limb. Next, gently slap the limb against the paper and wait for larger debris and bugs to move away, then swipe your hand over the paper. Look for red smearing to indicate spider mite infestation.

What will happen to my landscape? Spider mite infestations typically start to make the landscape look dull in color. As they suck the plant dry, the trees and shrubs turn yellow to brown. Spider mites feed and breed all season long.

What can I do about spider mites? Chemical control is generally your only option to control spider mites. Most local hardware stores carry insecticides that will control spider mites. Because these sprays can cause injury to certain plants, read the label thoroughly before using and apply according to the directions. Spider mites have multiple hatching periods so more than one insecticide application will be required for complete control. Combating spider mites can be a timely and unpleasant weekend task!
